Spam goes the weasel
Anybody who's run a website that allows comments knows the joys of playing whack-a-mole with the lowlife scum who post links to websites that would make Larry Flynt gag.
It looks like these people have taken their game to a new level by saturating the sites of people who are less than diligent at erasing this graffiti, and then posting comments on other sites linking to the "infected" sites. Clever, in an evil sort of way.
This change in tactics could be taken to mean that most blogs are actually pretty good at weeding out the obvious spam, and so the sites with a laissez-faire attitude to comment spam removal become more valuable to the comment spammers, and they wish to use them as springboards. It also means that their links are much more likely to pass through the blacklists in place, as they actually link to "real" sites that aren't flogging perverto-porn, penis enlargers or online casinos.
This does highlight the unfortunate fact that the Internet is a commons and anybody who lets other people post comments in their space has to be vigilant in keeping after the vermin, or we will all suffer the results of your infestations, thus stealing yet another little piece of the joy of the Internet.
Let's all strike the comment spams down with furious vengeance...
