The New iMac
By now we have all heard the news of the new iMac. While some are complaining about the lack of a headless imac, others are calling the design uninspired and a step backward.
I think it's brilliant.
By reducing the size of all the things they can, i.e. the computer components, and leveraging the space of the thing they can't i.e. the display, they have come up with a very lightweight, tiny footprint computer that is much more versatile than the previous machines. Think kiosk, dentist's office (on one of those arms), wall mounted at workstations.
It looks like the iMacs do not have the same VESA mount capability as the new displays however. Given their form factor, I'm certain that 3rd parties will quickly make a bracket for VESA mounting.
UPDATE: As bryan pointed out. They can be VESA mounted, and Apple will have the mount available in October. Soooooo cooool.
I'm really impressed with this design, not necessarily because it's a revolution in design like the original iMac, but because of the versatility it allows.

The iMac offers the smallest footprint ever, but you can make that zero with an optional VESA mount. Hang it from the wall or swing it around on your desk.
Right side of the page, second item down. Implies a standard VESA mount.

Posted by: joe at August 31, 2004 03:42 PMThere is one huge disappointment for me: the system out only supports video mirroring. It does not support dual monitors...even though it does have a video out.
Why couldn't Apple have put in a slightly better graphics system? This machine would have been great as dual monitor.
